Why Automation?
Custom Wash Solutions provides unique value by determining your best automation solution. Our automation solutions are unique to your needs and can result in advanced labor efficiency, safer OSHA certified practices, consistent quality control, and a system with growth adaptation capabilities.
Intelligent Analysis On Demand
We’re in the business of creating solutions which means we’re also experts in addressing the problem. We offer advanced systems auditing so that we can provide you with the cleanest product line extension. Our extensions respond directly to inefficiencies that impact production.
The following real-world examples showcase how automation resolved safety standard concerns, saved money, and salvaged previously lost time.
Case 1: Medical Waste Sharps Containers
The Customer’s Problem:
Leaders in the medical waste disposal and reusable medical waste container industries did not have wash systems in place that met OSHA safety standards.
Custom Wash’s Solution
We designed multiple solutions for the industry unique to each variety, type, and size of medical containers. These range from low volume semi-automated systems to fully automated decanting systems for wall mounted sharps containers integrated to the container wash lines. This system now properly addresses the OSHA safety code.
By Implementing custom integrated sharps decanting and washing systems, our customers have reduced the labor required to handle their volume to a single operator. This has resulted in a minimum savings of over $40,000 per year.
Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030:
(4) Reusable containers shall not be opened, emptied, or cleaned manually or in any other manner which would expose employees to the risk of percutaneous injury.
Case 2: Seedbox Solution
The Customer’s Problem:
Seedbox Solution cleans the inside of agricultural food grade containers for the seed industry. To achieve optimum efficacy, they apply a caustic chemical and then mechanically “scrub” the walls of the containers. This manual process created tremendous exposure to their associates. Even using extensive PPE, the operators were in close-contact with the chemical for consistently long periods of time. This was a personal hazard and also introduced efficacy inconsistencies due to non-automated scrubbing that proved to be inconsistent. The process was not only inefficient in terms of labor but also the time used to clean each container.
Custom Wash’s Solution:
We worked with Seedbox Solution to implement a 6-axis robot with a custom scrubber head mount. Our industry research informed us on the appropriate scrubbing head to optimize mechanical action. We also built a jacket cover to protect the robot from chemical exposure.
This solution not only saved direct labor dollars, but also significantly reduced Seedbox Solutions personnel exposure in a high-risk area by replacing several laborers who had previously been performing manual scrubbing. In addition to making the process substantially safer, automating the scrubbing process and material handling within the work cell brought annual labor savings well in excess of $100,000.
Case 3: Tote Sorting and Handling System
Currently In Proposal & Design
The Customer’s Problem:
The customer receives several SKU’s of totes that come mixed, unsorted, and dirty. Their contract requires each tote to be inspected, sorted, and scanned into inventory; then cleaned and palletized by SKU. The current process requires three or more operators and has no scanning or automatic inventory capabilities.
Custom Wash’s Solution:
We designed an automated process where totes are unloaded and fed into a line while an inline scanning and inspection portal identifies each tote by SKU and rejects unknown parts. An industrial robot then automatically feeds the wash line with the totes and stages other SKU’s in buffer zones for their specific wash cycles. Once the totes exit the washer/dryer, a second robot then sorts each tote onto pallets to the correct finished configuration. If the infeed operator stops feeding the line or the buffer zones fill to capacity, the line will automatically change over to run the next batch of SKU’s.
This proposed system design allows for a single operator to run the line with fully automatic inventory and data management. Implementing this automation equates to over $100,000 a year in savings to the customer. In addition, 100% accuracy on scanning, process, and inventory management.
